Summer Heating Tips

Summer Heating Tips

With this exceptional British Summer in full swing, the need to use your heating, boiler, radiators etc may not be a priority.

We often have customers asking is there are any steps they can take during the summer to ensure their gas boiler and central heating are working effectively, so no costly surprises arise when our winter resurfaces.  Here are some Summer Heating Tips;

Brave the temperatures – Run your heating

You should be running your heating system once every 4-6 weeks. This allows for any valves/pumps to not become stuck due to inactivity. Crack the windows open, and crank your thermostat up for around 30 minutes.

Keep radiator thermostats open

During the heating test, you will need to have your radiator thermostats (TRVS) in the open position. It may say ‘Max’ or be numbered ‘5’, so look to open these and test each radiator. Once the test is completed, leave the radiator valves open for the rest of the summer. This will allow for the valve to not remain stuck in the closed position, a common problem that can end up needing the system drained and valve replaced.

Boiler Servicing

The best time to get your central heating boiler serviced is mid – late summer. A good strip down service will ensure you have an optimised appliance ready for the harsher winter months when the boiler will be in more frequent use. Any defects like seals, valves, leaks, pressure etc can all be seen-to, so you can safely run your boiler at its maximum output when the frost sets in. A very cost effective way to keep your bills and repair costs at a minimum.

Replacing the Boiler

This may not be applicable to you, but if replacing your boiler is something you were considering then the summer is the perfect time to do it. Depending on the work load, you may find yourself without heating and hot water for 1-2 days, so why not make the most of the warm weather and get your boiler upgraded.

Check any exposed pipework

If any of your pipework in the home is visible, have a quick visual inspection to check for any signs of leaks, damage or corrosion.

Prepare for the winter

If you have pipework exposed on outside walls, or in the loft or basement, then invest in some lagging and cover the pipework where possible. Burst pipes are very common on exposed pipework, so it is advised that lagging is installed to protect from the harsher conditions.
